Obituary

Susan Lee Powers, born on July 30, 1957, in Fairbury, IL, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026. Susan was a fiercely loving woman whose resilience and humor were an inspiration to all who knew her. A steadfast pillar of faith, Susan's devout Catholicism guided her throughout her life, providing comfort and strength in times of joy and sorrow. Her generous spirit and unwavering love for her family were a testament to her deep faith, and her life was a living embodiment of her beliefs.

Susan made her most recent home in Centennial, Colorado to be closer to her children after spending most of her life in Glendale, Arizona. A highly educated woman, Susan held a Bachelor's Degree in Physical and Elementary Education, and a Master's Degree in Secondary Education. She was a tri-sport collegiate athlete and a dedicated teacher by profession, pouring her love of learning and sports into her career and students. Susan's hobbies were wide-ranging, from reading and golfing to cheering on her favorite teams mostly in college basketball and women's softball, but enjoyed any live event. She had a love for the sunshine and relished lying by any body of water— the warmer the better. She was also a proud pet parent to her many dogs throughout the years, who provided her with much joy and companionship.

Above all else, Susan cherished her family. She was a loving mother to her daughters, Kasey Powers and Nikki (Jon) Carley. She is also survived by her siblings, Mary (Bob) Kacmarcik, Ron (Kathy) Stecher, Jim (Dianne) Stecher and brother-in-law Pat Powers. Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Gladys Stecher, and her beloved husband, Michael Powers. Her love for her late husband was a testament to her capacity for deep, enduring love. Though they were separated by his passing for many years, their love remained steadfast and enduring. Now, they are reunited in eternal peace, their bond made whole again in the presence of God. Their love was a beautiful example of what it means to be made for each other, inspiring all who knew them and reflecting the kind of love many hope and pray to find.

As we remember Susan, we are reminded of her laughter, her generosity, and the love she had for her family and faith. Her resilience in the face of adversity was a lesson to us all. We invite you to share your memories of Susan and upload photos to her memorial page as a tribute to her life and the impact she had on all of us.

A funeral service celebrating Susan's life will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church located at 204 N Pine Street, Piper City, IL 60959 on Saturday, June 6th at 10:30am, where friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance, prayer and gratitude for the love she so freely gave. Following the service, she will be laid to rest alongside her late husband, Mike, at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, where a committal ceremony will take place as we entrust her to eternal peace and the promise of reunion.
